VOTE NOW TO SUPPORT SWAN FOR LIFE!

Swan for Life Cancer Foundation was fortunate to receive a grant in 2012 from LIVESTRONG to bring Art Therapist, Lindsey Klingenberg, MA, LLPC, to the infusion centers in Clarkston and Rochester.  Over the last several months Lindsey has been spending hours with patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment creating art as a modality to express emotions and aid in healing.  Many patients have commented regularly that "Art has saved them" and they "no longer dread treatment because they look forward to the latest art project Lindsey has for them."

We've applied for funding from the LIVESTRONG Foundation again this year and we are excited and proud to announce that our application has been accepted. Applicants are now competing in an online voting process that will determine which locations will be awarded funding in 2013. If we receive the most votes within our region, we will receive funds, materials and training to implement the Outpatient Artist in Residence Program.
Please vote MARCH 12 - 28 to bring this program to our community, and share the link below with your family and friends:

Swan for Life to Host Breast Health Afternoon Teas in Rochester and Clarkston

Swan for Life Cancer Foundation will be hosting two Breast Health Afternoon Tea Events in Rochester on October 6, 2012 and in Clarkston on October 20, 2012.  This is the third annual tea for Clarkston and second annual for Rochester.  "This event has really been embraced by community businesses," says Angela Bercume, Executive Director for Swan for Life Cancer Foundation.  Local business owners are table captains at the event which allows them to creatively decorate a table for 10 with places settings and a centerpiece.  "It's great to see each table captain's unique vision for their table and they get quite competitive in outdoing each other," says Bercume.  The end result is a beautifully decorated room to honor and celebrate Breast Cancer Survivors for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October.  The events are attended by survivors, families, friends and community members.  The attendees enjoy presentations by medical professionals, support professionals and always the highlight - a breast cancer survivor.  Please reserve your spot early, because space is limited!  This event is free and open to anyone in the community.  Rsvp at 248.620.9600, ext. 5.

Swan for Life Hosts First Annual 5K "Run for Hope" at Oakland University

On a cool, sunny Sunday morning this past weekend, over 100 runners/walkers arrived on the beautiful campus of Oakland University to participate in the Swan for Life Cancer Foundation First Annual 5K "Run for Hope."  It was a very festive crowd who enjoyed great jazz music by local band, Blue Effect as well as air brush tattoos and race food provided by Whole Foods Market in Rochester.  The course wound its way through Oakland University campus with an end that included navigating a bridge and set of stairs!  Prizes were awarded to first through third place finishes in each age category - over 40 prizes were handed out.  Swan for Life Cancer Foundation announced the new Patient Assistance Program which will be launched in early 2013 funded partly by donations from the run.  This program will help patients that need assistance with daily expenses such as gas, utilities, child care and groceries that can become more difficult to meet with the additional financial burden of cancer treatments.  Look for more information on the application process for this program in the coming months.  Thank you to all those that supported and participated in this very successful event!
